''Humiliated and Insulted'' (, ''Unizhennye i oskorblyonnye'') — also known in English as ''The Insulted and Humiliated'', ''The Insulted and the Injured'' or ''Injury and Insult'' — is a novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky, first published in 1861 in the monthly magazine ''Vremya''. Plot introduction Narrated by a young novelist, Vanya (Ivan Petrovich), who has just released his first novel (which bears an obvious resemblance to Dostoevsky's own first novel, ''Poor Folk''), it consists of two gradually converging plot lines. One deals with Vanya's close friend and former love object, Natasha, who has left her family to live with her new lover, Alyosha. Alyosha is the saintly but dim-witted son of Prince Valkovsky, who hopes to gain financially by marrying Alyosha off to an heiress, Katya. Valkovsky's cruel machinations to break up Alyosha and Natasha identify him as one of the most memorable "predatory types" that Dostoevsky created. Biography He is the son of the composer Andrei Yakovlevich Eshpai, and the grandson of the composer Yakov Andreyevich Eshpai. Shūgorō Yamamoto
, better known by the pen name of , was a Japanese people, Japanese novelist and short story, short-story writer active during the Shōwa period of Japan. He was noted for his popular literature, and is known to have published works under at least fourteen different pen names. Early life Yamamoto was born in what is now Otsuki, Yamanashi, Otsuki city in Yamanashi prefecture, to a family in impoverished circumstances. Lack of money forced him to drop out of secondary school, but he continued his education part-time, while living as a boarder above a used bookstore. His pen-name came from the name of the store where he lived. Literary career Yamamoto's literary debut was with a short story called ''Sumadera fukin'', and a stage drama in three acts, called ''Horinji iki'', which were both published in 1926. is a 1965 Japanese ''jidaigeki'' film co-written, edited, and directed by Akira Kurosawa, in his last collaboration with actor Toshiro Mifune. Based on Shūgorō Yamamoto's 1959 short story collection, '' Akahige Shinryōtan'', the film takes place in Koishikawa, a district of Edo, towards the end of the Tokugawa period (i.e. early or mid-19th century), and is about the relationship between a town doctor and his new trainee. Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel '' Humiliated and Insulted'' provided the source for a subplot about a young girl, Otoyo ( Terumi Niki), who is rescued from a brothel. The film looks at the problem of social injustice and explores two of Kurosawa's favorite topics: humanism and existentialism.
